It is bigger than a regular ring flash, way bigger; that is basically because the light box extend from your flash head to the ring around the lens. Because it fits around the lens, one doesn't need lens rings, so one can use a variety of focal length of lenses. The only problem for the Ray Flash is that it blocks the IR low light focusing aid in my Canon 580EX flash. If one wants to focus in low light, you are going to have to focus manually. In most lighting conditions, auto focus can be used. I have only used the Ray Flash with a macro lens; it blocks a small portion of the focusing ring on my Canon macro lens, but the focusing ring is still easily usable. I also tried it with a 28-135mm zoom and a 12-19mm zoom; all the focusing and zooming controls were usable. The only thing that is not usable are focusing rails; the flash ring is so large that the lower rails of my Pentax focusing rail prevents the Ray Flash mounting parallel with the lens' front element.Ray Flash is great alternative to expensive ring flash; especially if you don't want to buy another expensive flash unit that is as specializes as a ring flash.
