De DMC-TZ20 bevat een 24mm LEICA DC ultra groothoeklens met 16x optische zoom (35mm equivalent: 24-384mm). De speciale nano-coating in de lensstructuur zorgt ervoor dat ghosts (dubbele beelden) en flares (lichtvlekjes als gevolg van direct zonlicht) tot het minimum worden gereduceerd. Het enorme zoombereik van maar liefst 16x is tevens te gebruiken in de video mode. Naast 16x Optische Zoom beschikt de DMC-TZ20 ook over 21x Intelligent Zoom. Dit is digitale zoom met optische beeldkwaliteiten. De 24mm groothoeklens legt ca. 213% beeld vast ten opzichte van een normale 35mm lens. De DMC-TZ20 is tevens voorzien van een 14.1-megapixel MOS sensor, waardoor het mogelijk is te fotograferen met een snelheid van 10 beelden per seconde in volledige resolutie.
