  • Sony HDR-CX700v: Polaroid vs. HOYA Polarizer Filter Test

This is a polarizing filter test I created to demonstrate the difference between different types of polarizing filters. Camcorder Used: Sony HDR-CX700v Filter Brands Used: Polaroid & HOYA Filter Size Used: 49mm The camcorder I used to create this video is a 37mm. Originally I purchased a 37mm filter set since that is the size my camcorder uses. But when I learned that my CPL filter created vignetting around the corners, when I fully zoomed out, (due to the fact of the ring being thicker) I had to go with a step up ring. After a bit of research I ended up going with a 49mm which solved the problem entirely. This is why I am using 49mm instead of a 37mm.

  • iPhone 3GS + Hoya R72 filter = near infrared camera

The visible spectrum is light with wavelengths between 400-700nm. An R72 filter blocks all light with wavelengths less then 720nm. Most images sensors in digital cameras are sensitive to light past 700nm in order to make a digital image look like what you see with your eye camera manufactures place a little piece of glass in the camera that blocks this light. Cheaper camera, however, do not and fortunately for us cell phone cameras usually fall under the cheap mark. So, by placing an R72 filter over an iPhone camera we are able to see only light above 720nm that the camera is picking up. Vegetation reflects very well at these wavelengths while the sky and pavement do not giving cool effects such as a black sky or snow white trees. And the best part is you only need the smallest filter to cover the iPhone lens! I bought mine for around $30

  • Is my B+W UV filter fake?

Hello, I purchased a B+W UV filter from eBay, and it cost a total of $42.95. When I received it, I took it out of the case and immediately felt something strange going on. It squeaks when you apply pressure, even a little. I have another B+W filter (62mm) and that thing is the most solid filter I've ever owned. The 77mm one I got, however, is the opposite. Despite it being the larger filter, it weighs in at 30 grams (or 1.1 oz) while the 62mm I have is 33 grams (or 1.2 oz) The box does have the B+W hologram sticker on it, but the bottom wasn't sealed when I received it, which can allow the seller to just put a fake filter in a real box. Any ideas? The one I received does not feel like brass at all. I've searched around and read that some of them are made of alloy instead, but I'm not sure about their claims. Also, on my 62mm filter, it has writing on the inner portion on it, while it doesn't on the 77mm. What do you guys think?

  • Hoya 49mm

Buy from Amazon Canada www.amazon.ca Product Description Hoya 49mm This specialized Hoya 49mm HMC UV-IR Multi-Coated Filter has the ability to cut out both UV rays below 390nm and IR rays above 700nm leaving just the light rays in the visible spectrum passing through the filters and into the camera. This is important because CCD and CMOS sensors are extremely susceptible to UV and IR rays just outside the visible spectrum that have a very negative impact on image quality. The Hoya UV & IR Cut filter blocks both UV rays and IR rays yielding clearer and sharper pictures outdoors. This filter can reduce the effects of atmospheric haze to an even greater degree than a standard UV filter. In addition this filter is multi-coated which greatly reduces lens flare and ghosting and the slim frame helps avoid vignetting on super wide angle lenses. And of course this filter will protect your lens surface from dust moisture and other contaminants. Key Features: â?¢ Multi-coating greatly reduces lens flare and ghosting â?¢ Slim filter frame helps avoid vignetting on super wide angle lenses â?¢ Blocks both UV rays and IR rays yielding clearer and sharper pictures outdoors â?¢ Protects your lens surface from dust and scratches The Hoya UV & IR light transmission curve shows the sharp-cut nature of the filter glass and coatings as well as the consistent light transmission in the visible spectrum. Buy from Amazon CA Site www.amazon.ca Product Description Hoya UV This Hoya 49mm EVO SMC Ultraviolet UV Filter is a multi-purpose filter that is designed to optimize the photography experience of the digital SLR user. UV filters absorb ultraviolet rays that often make outdoor photographs hazy and indistinct and should be constantly fitted to a lens to provide improved clarity and color balance as well as to provide protection to your lens. These professional quality filters are made in Japan using precision optical glass that is carefully smelted and blended to yield perfect optical results. Hoya has applied the same care and precision to the multi-coating process using an Improved Super Multi-coating (IS-HMC) formula to greatly reduce or eliminate reflections off the surface of the glass. In addition the filter is overlaid with a clear water & stain resistant coating that is easy to clean. This makes for easier care and handling of the filter in the field. All coating layers are applied in a furnace to bond the coating to the glass. In addition all Hoya EVO filters have very low-profile aluminum filter frames to house the glass and keep it perfectly parallel to the plane of the CCD or COS sensor while providing enough rigidity to hold up to years of use. The low-profile frame also makes the filters compatible with a wide array of super and ultra wide-angle lenses.
