The 1.8G lens is a newer lens with built in AF motor for fast and quiet focusing. In my opinion 1.8G lens has the edge over 1.8D lens but it also costs a $100 more than 1.8D lens. If you can afford to spend the extra money then it's worth it specially if you're a semi pro or pro photographer.

Nikon 85mm 1.8G Review
My review on the Nikon 85mm 1.8G, I also do a side by side comparison of images shot with the 85mm 1.4G. Samples from the 85mm 1.8G can be seen at the links below. www.flickr.com www.flickr.com The AF-S 85mm 1.8G is the successor to the 85mm 1.8D; it features AF-S so unlike the older D version of the lens it will auto focus on entry level Nikon DSLR's. It uses a more advanced optical formula consisting of 9 elements in 9 groups. This is an improvement over the D version which used 6 elements in 6 groups. It lacks the Nano Crystal Coating of the more expensive 85mm 1.4G but still seems to keep flare under control well. Unlike it's predecessor it is much sharper wide open and keeps chromatic aberration (purple fringing) at bay. It is just slightly wide open than the 85mm 1.4G, however the difference in sharpness fades as both lenses are stopped down. For portraits the 85mm 1.4G is still the best choice as it renders better bokeh. The 85mm 1.8G is better as an all around low light lens but still does well for portraits also.
